Brief

The project tasked me with designing a plastic injection moulded electric toothbrush that related to a breakfast cereal brand of my choosing. The brand I chose was Futurelife. This products would act as a marketing campaign for the chosen brand so it has to be interesting and stimulate the consumer to interact with the brand. This project aims to teach us how to design with ergonomics in mind as well as how to design around standardised components.

Prototyping
I first started by acquiring and disassembling a cheap toothbrush
I then had my CAD file 3D printed. Once it had been printed I then used a pair of pliers and a crafting knife to remove the support material from the prints.
The next step was to remove the layer lines from the 3D print so I used a range of sanding paper starting at 220 grit until I finished at 800 grit.
I also reused the head of the cheap toothbrush but inorder for it to fit within my designed case I had to use a Dremel with a sanding wheel to smoothen out rough cut from the hand saw.
heel t Now that all parts were ready I fit them all together and using adhesive to bond the two parts of the cover together.
The bonding of the two cover parts left my case with a seam where they joined, so to get rid of the seam I prepared some automotive body filler and filled in the gap. After sanding away the filler the seam was no longer visible.
I then used masking tape to mask areas I did not want to paint such as the bristles of the brush and the button whole to prevent paint from entering the electronics. I also reused the contact pads from the cheap toothbrush in my design.
I first used primer to help the paint adhere better to the plastic. Next I used a glossy white to coat the whole toothbrush. I then created a mask from masking tape to aid me in painting the green circle at the top of my brush. I then painted the orange details by hand.

All concepts explore the idea of smiling for the future as the slogan which is a paly on words. The first meaning is to smile for the future the customer is smiling at the Futurelife brand because they are happy with their purchase and the second meaning is the customer will be smiling for the future because they are making healthy choices now with their nutrition there fore they will live long, happy and healthy lives.
Concept 1: Aims to draw the focus solely on the design of the toothbrush as it presents the toothbrush as the hero and central point of focus within this advert layout
Concept 2: Shows the consumer that there are multiple variations of the toothbrush found within different products within the Futurelife range of products.
Concept 3: Once again uses the toothbrush as the hero of the layout however also incorporates the brand by using the porridge powder to contrast the background and draw the viewers focus towards the toothbrush.
